On Tuesday, October 29th, the Associated Students of Claremont McKenna College (ASCMC) Vice President of Student Activities announced that Snowglobe, an annual winter-themed party and one of ASCMC’s major themed events, will be canceled this year. The email cited “events budget cuts and unexpected expenses” and “an academic calendar which would’ve caused Snowglobe to be the Saturday before Thanksgiving when many students have already left for break” as the causes of the cancellation.
The email stated that “the funds that would’ve gone toward Snowglobe will instead be used on Club Claremont, Wedding Party, & Pirate Palooza as well as smaller weekend events such as the upcoming Halloween TNC.”
In an email to the Independent, the ASCMC Student Body President elaborated on the budget constraints leading to the cancellation:
"ASCMC’s total budget is smaller this year, resulting in reduced funding for events. In light of last year’s overspend in the Events budget and rising inflation costs, we concluded that canceling Snowglobe was the most fiscally responsible choice, to avoid a budget deficit and ensure that future events meet expectations.”
Snowglobe’s cancellation comes less than two months after ASCMC and DOS announced policy changes requiring outside bartenders for 5C events, which they acknowledged would lead to increased expenses. At the time, a member of ASCMC’s Executive Board confirmed that there would be no change in the number of events.
The ASCMC President denied that the cancellation was related to “increased spending for bartenders and alcohol licenses at Oktoberfest and Monte Carlo.” She explained that the additional cost from the policy change was around $500, which was not enough to necessitate canceling Snowglobe. She also assured that no spring semester events will be canceled.
“Pomona hosts a similar event (Yule Ball) that can serve as a substitute for CMC students who will be on campus and who would like to go to a 5C party that weekend,” she added.
